Our prisons are considered one of the better managed jails in the country, particularly in the area of correctional administration and use of technology driven security devices. We are known for the innovative measures taken to reform and rehabilitate inmates. We are a complex of 10 jails, 9 of which are in Tihar and the 10th one is in Rohini.
Of late, we have been in the news because a number of high profile inmates are lodged here. However, we are also known for the products that are made here and sold under the brand name TJ's. The products made in the prison factory and bakery has been appreciated by the citizens of Delhi. To make them accessible to common citizens, we have tied up with Kendriya Bhandar who has agreed to sell them at 20 of their outlets. Tihar has been the pioneer in the introduction of yoga and meditation in prisons for the reformation of inmates.
The recent initiatives include "Phado aur Padhao", a literacy programme for 2,500 illiterate inmates lodged here, run in collaboration with the National Literacy Mission Authority. Another experiment is the creation of Music Rooms in all jails. Equipped with basic musical instruments like Harmonium, Tabla, Guitar etc. they provide a peaceful refuge for those interested in music. A number of corporate were engaged to interviews during a campus placement drive.
