Plantation/Greening of Delhi:- Every year a greening action plan is prepared for implementation by various greening agency. Specific targets are assigned to various greening agency for the year.Meticuleous monitoring of these target at different level of the government is done to ensure its implementation.
 
 
 
 
  Under this action plan, Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs), Market Traders Association (MTAs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Schools have joined hands with the government agencies. About 90 Lakhs seedlings have been planted and 12 lakh seedlings have been distributed by various greening agencies including Forest department during the last four years.
   
  In the year 2007-08, about 4.0 Lakhs saplings have been planted by the Forest Department and total 10 lakhs saplings were planted by all greening agencies. The Forest Department has distributed about 5.0 Lakhs saplings to various stakeholders including 354 RWAs and 384 Schools
   
Green Delhi
   
  - Delhi is one of the Greenest Capital Cities in the World.
- Green cover of Delhi increased from 30 sq.km to 300 sq. km in last 10 years.
- Green cover is 20% of the Delhi's geographical area.
- 5000 Acres of denuded mine land, developed with plantation of seven lakh trees with the help of Eco-Task Force, a unit of the Territorial Army.
- 14 existing City Forests densified, 9 new city forest created in the year 2007-08 and 9 more new city forest added during the year 2008-09.The forest department plans to creates another 10 City   Forest in this year.
- Two Biodiversity parks namely Yamuna Bio-Diversity Park and Aravali Bio-diversity Park are     being developed.

Delhi's Greening Action Plan
   
  - Since 1997, an Annual Greening Action Plan is being prepared by the Forest Department.
- Its main aim is to undertake afforestation programs in co-operation with various Government   Agencies and civil society groups.
- Coordinated efforts involving 18 agencies being made.
- 1.845 million tree saplings were planted in the year 2006-07.
- The target for the year 2007-08 was 1.89 million saplings.
- Target for 2008-09 also stands at 1.8 million saplings were planted.

  Examples of preserving Delhi's green heritage are:
- Delhi has 5 Reserve Forests of 7784 Ha and 25 protected forests managed by different agencies including Forest Department.
- 14 city forests in Delhi are managed by Department of Forest. 18 New City Forests developed in last two year. 10 more new city forests planned for 2009-10.

Management of Ridge land in Delhi
   
  - The Ridge land in Delhi was notified under the Indian Forest Act in 1994
- The Ridge in Delhi is represented by an area of 7777 ha
- The final notification of the Ridge land will be done after the final Forest settlement process is   completed for which demarcation is started

Recent initiatives of the Department to protect the Ridge land
   
  - The Ridge Management Board (RMB) under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary is   monitoring the matters related to the Ridge
- The RMB meeting held on 29/06/2006, deliberated upon the issues such as protection of the   Central and South Central Ridge, unauthorized constructions in Dasgara village, shifting of   Sanjay Nagar colony from the Asola wild Life Sanctuary, on forestry activities in Sanjay Van,   eviction of encroachments from Nanakpura, etc,.
- Vigilance Squad has been created to keep close watch and prevent encroachments and malba   dumping.
   
Ecorestoration of Bhatti area of Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary through Eco Task Force (ETF)
   
  - The Department is implementing the project on Rehabilitation of 2100 acres of Bhatti Mines area   since October 2000, which is a part of Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary.
- Project period was for 5 years at the cost of Rs.823 lacs, same has been extended for a further   period of 3 years with an additional outlay of Rs.493.19 lakhs.
- Up to 31.03.2006, 7.00 lakhs saplings have been planted.
- Being extended for another 3 years this year.
- A second Eco Task Force being created for Asola Wildlife Sanctuary of 5000 acres this year.
   
Compensatory Plantation
   
  - Under the Tree Preservation Act 1994, Delhi CA is done @ ten trees for one tree to be felled and   @ five trees for one tree to be translocated
- Compensatory Plantation in a total area of 261.90 ha in villages ( Isapur, Hirankunda, Rewla   Khanpur, Kharkhari Jatmal, Sultanpur Dabas, Kungeshpur, Kutubgarh, Auchandi, Harewali) done   in 2007-08.
- The area is being developed with proper landscaping so as to make 9 good City Forests.
- 6-7 sites being taken up this year to create new city forests.
   
Water Bodies
   
  - 175 no. of water bodies has been identified.
- Plantation of 17500 no. of saplings for rejuvenation of 175 Water Bodies.

  • South Division - 5000 Saplings
   
Conservation Awareness Programmes
   
  - Through audio visual, print, electronic media as well as by organizing plantation activities on   various occasions.
- Advertisement through English and Hindi Newspapers.
- Posters and panels on road intersections, Metro and other appropriate places.
- Involvement of 2000 Eco-Clubs which have become a Green Brigade for Delhi.
- Involvement of 2000 RWAs who are active in Delhi's Greening efforts.
   
Free Distribution of Saplings

Made mandatory for plots having minimum area of 100 sq. meters to install the Rainwater Harvesting Structures in their premises.
   
The financial assistance for 50% of the project cost or Rs. One Lakh, whichever is maximum, is provided by Delhi Govt/DJB to the RWAs/Schools for this purpose.
   
Rain water harvesting structures have been created in more than 100 schools and colleges to harvest the 40 hours of rain in Delhi
   
Rain water harvesting structure will be installed in 2500 schools and colleges.
 
 
Waste Paper Recycling machine has been setup in the Delhi Secretariat for recycling the waste paper.
   
88 paper recycling machines installed in schools of Delhi so far and 100 more being installed this year.
   
Cost of Paper Recycling Unit is about Rs.1.0 lakh
 
 
Delhi Govt. has made the use of solar water heating system mandatory in the buildings like Industries, Hospitals, Nursing homes, Hotels, Canteen, Residential buildings having an area of 500 sq.m, educational colleges, hostels, technical or vocational colleges etc.
   
Govt. of Delhi is providing rebate/ incentive of Rs. 6000/- to 60000/- depending upon the capacity to domestic electricity consumers for installation of solar water heater.
   
45 solar water heater installed in schools & colleges of Delhi so far and 50 more being installed this year.
   
Cost for 1000 liter of solar water heater is about Rs.1.2 to 1.4 lakh
   
  Savings are 50 – 85% annually on power bills.
 
 
A green building encompasses features such as sustainable site planning, optimum energy efficiency, use of renewable form of energy, water and waste management, strategies, use of fly ash bricks etc.
   
Municipal Corporation of Delhi is adopting this concept in its 28 storeyed new civic center coming up at Minto Road and in its multilevel car parking.
   
Delhi Transco Ltd. is constructing its corporate office of 9000 sq. m. with the Energy conservation Building Code (ECBC). Which will cut down power consumption by 30%?
   
PWD proposes to adopt the concept of green building in their 500 bedded GTB Hospital, Dwarka Hospital, Thiagraja Sports Complex and Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research
