Diet is what we eat. A balanced diet provides all nutrients and vitamins essential for maintaining good health. It becomes even more important when it comes to therapeutic dietary modifications. Medical nutrition therapy or maintenance of proper nutrition has been documented as a cornerstone of patient care since the time of Hippocrates. Therapeutic diets are planned to maintain or restore good nutrition in the patients. In most cases, therapeutic diet is used to supplement the medical or surgical treatment of the patients, while in some instances, like NIDDM a therapeutic diet is the most important aspect of the patients’ treatment, rather than medical therapy.
