Maulana Azad Medical College was started in February 1958 and was located within the Irwin Hospital (now known as Lok Nayak Hospital). The first head of the department of Surgery was Prof. Ramesh Nigam, who laid the foundation for this department as it stands today. Prof. S.P. Jain followed him as the head of department in 1962, and continued to work towards the improvement of this department. He was succeeded by Prof. Satyanand in the year 1965, who was in turn succeeded by Prof. S.K. Nair in the year 1975, as the head of department of surgery. The department was located in the same location in the hospital building till 1978, when it was shifted to its present location in Dr. B.L. Taneja Block.
The Department of Surgery is located on the second floor of B.L. Taneja Block. Prof. K.S. Mehndiratta took over as the head of the department in 1981, and was followed by Prof. B.S. Rana in 1984. It was during his tenure that the famous Surgery Update programme for post-graduate teaching was conceived. After his retirement in 1990, Prof. T.K. Malik took over as the head of the department. He was instrumental in setting up the laser service for surgery at Lok Nayak hospital. Dir. Prof. V.K. Ramteke took over as head of the department in 1994. It was his efforts that introduced laparoscopic surgery at this hospital. Under his guidance and leadership, the department has seen exponential growth and development. Department of Surgery at Lok Nayak Hospital is famous all over India and worldwide for the quality of care and the diversity of services provided.
