University College Of Medical Sciences


 
University College of Medical Sciences is a medical college of the University of Delhi for degrees of MBBS , MD/MS and PhD in medical subjects. The Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital is its attached Hospital. The UCMS and GTB Hospital , with 750 beds, cater to the under-privileged population in the surrounding areas. Patients come to this hospital for different types of treatment. The students thus get an opportunity to learn practical aspects of a large number of diverse health conditions

 

Admissions


 
Undergraduate(MBBS):

 
The college admits 100 students every year for undergraduate studies. The admission is through an Entrance Test (DPMI) after (10+2) education. Eighty five per cent seats are for students passing 12th class examination from a recognised school located in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, and the rest fifteen per cent are filled-up through a separately conducted all-India competition. In both the categories of admissions, some seats are reserved for SC/ST candidates.

 
PostGraduate(MD/MS/PhD):

 

The college also admits students for postgraduate (MD/MS/PhD) studies in major subjects. The admission is again through a screening test for which main eligibility is MBBS from an Indian University. Seventyfive per cent seats are for the students of the University of Delhi and the other 25% are open to candidates from other Indian universities for which a separate entrance test is conducted.


 

Facilities


 
There is a large, open campus with facilities of sports, hostels and staff quarters. The college has an active interface with the surrounding community that serves as an appropriate model to teach and practice community medicine. An independent facility is available for all computer-related services including biostatistical computations. Special facilities available for patients include autoanalysers , fluorescent microscopes. ELISA readers, lypholisers , phase contrast microscopes, inverted microscopes, colour doppler and HPLC. Facilities are also available for lung function tests, evoked potential responses, angiography and mammography, endoscopy of various types, hormone assays, stone analysis, identification of DNA mutations using PCR technology and blood gas analysis. Surgical facilities include PCNL, transurethral resection, C02 laser surgery, liquid nitrogen cryosurgery, endoscopic sinus surgery, and oculoplastic , orbital and lacrimal surgery. An allogenic bone banking system is in operation. Twentyfour -hour MLC and round-the-clock ambulance service is available. Separate units are functioning for Yoga and Ayurveda . Regular clinics are held for acupuncture.

Maulana Azad Medical college and associated hospital complex consist of four integral units, namely Maulana Azad medical college, Lok Nayak Hospital,Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital and Guru Nanak Eye Centre. The college was established 22 year after the commissioning of the Irwin Hospital a well established general hospital drawing Patients mainly from Delhi and from neighbouring states of Punjab , Haryana . Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.

This idealy Situated general hospital, with long years of reputation Paved the way for realization of this medical college. The college made its humble beginning in hospital block of Irwin ( Lok Nayak ) hospital in 1958. in 1964, Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital was added to the complex to provide training facilities Superspecialities . The Guru Nank Eye Centre came into existence on 20th December, 1977 with the commissioning of a separate out patient department for ophthamic diseases. The wards for the indoor Patients was added in 1986. The long awaited demand of the residents of Union Territory of Delhi for a Dental wing Was met with the establishment of separate Dental Wing in 1983.

The college is named after a great Patriot and educationist, Azad . The foundation of main building of the college Was laid by Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, the then Home Minister of India , on 24th October ,1959 . This huilding was declared open by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru on 26th February, 1961 Since its foundation, the college has Successfully trained. 5802 Medical graduates and 172 Dental graduates 2722 post graduates. The College has now completed 41 years and has emerged as one of the premier medical institutions of India.

The study growth of MAMC is the outcome of sound traditions, established by the leadership in the formative years, reinforced with a relentless and continuing struggle by the dedicated faculty and the disciplined students. The primary aim of this institution is to produce competent basic doctors, specialists and superspecialists . It has endeavourd to promote all facilities conductive to learning and furtherance of knowledge by:


  1. Contribution towards national health care delivery system by providing efficientand expert medical service through the asociated hospitals.

  2. Establishing routine and specialized laboratories of excellence and other investigative facilities.

  3. Pursuance of objectives of medical education by improving the course contents, continuing education and strengthening of research activities.

  4. Extending medical support to the local authorities for health care programmes .

 

Extending health care facilities to the 30,000 rural population of Delhi through its organised centres in the community.


 
Students (Annual Report 1998)

 
One hundred and eighty students including 60 women students were admitted to MBBS course. Twenty BDS students were admitted six women students In the 33 full time courses leading to various post graduate degrees/ diplomas and post doctorals , 115 doctors were-enrolled including 41 lady doctors. During 1998, 871 uhder graduates (MBBS plus BDS) were on the rolls of the college.

There are 180 interns and 301 doctors pursuing postgraduate courses. Nearly 265 undergraduate students received financial assistance either from government or other agencies. With the introduction of the residency scheme in Delhi hospitals in 1974, all postgraduate students are absorbed in this scheme at appropriate levels. Q2. What is the procedure for admission ?
Ans. This hospital is providing specialised services in:-

Candidate applying for admission for M.B.B.S / B.D.S degree courses must have appeared passed 12th class examination under 10+2 system conducted by the CBSE / Council for Indian School Certificate / Jamia Millia Islamia , New Delhi ( except patrachar vidhalaya and Open School) with required subjects i.e. physics, Chemistry, Biology and English (core) securing 50% marks in aggregate in these subjects from the recognised schools conducted regular classes situated within the National Capital Territory of Delhi only, would be eligible to appear in the entrance examination. The candidate will attained the age of 17 years.

Generally during the month of March application forms for admission to the entrance examination are issued.

The candidates must have passed in all the required subjects seperately ( in theory and practical ) required for admission to MBBS BDS courses before the last date prescribed for submission of the mark sheet.

The entrance examinations are conducted by the Controller of Examination. North Campus,University of Delhi , Delhi 7.
Q3. What are the Research Projects going on ?
Ans.

There are 8 Major research projects going on and 14 projects have been forwarded for sanction. Five Fellowship have been awarded in the year 1998-99.
