Introduction
 
Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital (SGMH) is one of the several 100-bedded general hospitals run by Government of N.C.T.D. providing health care free of cost (Except Ultrasound) with facilities of OPD, Casualty and Indoor of all common departments along with free drug distribution and in-house investigations for patients. S.G.M.H. is a general hospital and at present it is catering to about one million population of Northwest Delhi with O.P.D. facility of all departments in forenoon and 24 hours services in Casualty, Laboratory and Radiological investigations, Delivery (Child Birth), Operation Theatres and Blood Bank services. Hospital is currently managing a patient load of about 2500 per day. Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital located in S-Block, Mangol Puri, Delhi is one of the seven 100 bedded hospitals planned by Govt. of N.C.T. of Delhi during the 6th Five Year Plan under special component plan for Schedule Caste/Schedule Tribes. It was planned with the objective of providing medical facilities to the inhabitants of JJ Clusters and resettlement colonies of Mangol Puri, Sultan Puri and Nangloi. Another objective was to ease the ever increasing burden of major hospital situated in Delhi. At present, it caters to health needs of more than 10 lakh population – routine as well as emergencies. The hospital was commissioned in April, 1986

Achievements
 

S.G.M. hospital was started in 1986 providing only OPD services, since then it has continuously added more and more facilities for service to the patients by modifications in existing building, acquisition of latest equipments and addition of more Medical and technical manpower. In this way hospital has started Indoor services, operation theatres, Labour room, Blood Bank, ICU etc. It has also started 24 hours working casualty department providing specialist cover to all diseases. Inauguration of 150 bedded Maternity & Child Block construction work was done on 29.04.2003 by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, its likely to be completed within two years.

 
 
Who- can avail facilities of the Hospital?
 
Anyone in need, Indian or Non-Indian can avail the facilities in the hospital
 
What- facilities are available?
 
At present OPD (Medicine, Surgery, Gynae ANC, Family Welfare Immunization, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Eye, ENT, Skin & V.D., Dental), Laboratory and Radiology (with ultrasound) Investigations, Operations, 24 hours Emergency in all departments with Facility for Delivery and DOTS centre.
 
How can one avail hospital facilities?
 
A patient has to come to hospital, as home visit or home ambulance services are not available at present. For availing O.P.D. consultation he has to get himself registered and get his O.P.D. card made either for Department of his choice, or depending on his complaints registration clerk decides which department and room number is needed by patient for consultation. After registration he goes to concerned doctor and gets free consultation and is advised investigations if required and medicines which he gets free from hospital pharmacy. For emergency services he has to come to Casualty Department where he/she gets medical advice, required investigations, medicine for immediate relief, and if needed admission and operation or other treatment all free of cost.
 
When can one avail facilities?
 
Routine health care services (Consultation, Investigation and Medicines) are available on all working days (that is all days except Sundays and Gazetted holidays), after getting O.P.D. Registration whose timings are 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. (Weekdays) and 9 A.M. to 12 P.M. (Saturday). However in case of any emergency, medical facilities are available in Casualty Department round the clock on all 365 or 366 days of the year.

How much waiting time it takes for person to avail facility in hospital?

On normal day it takes about 1 hour for registration, 60 to 90 minutes for consultation and 1 hour in getting medicines that is a total of about 3 hours and more time is required if investigations are needed.

 
Who can avail Investigative facilities of the hospital and when?
 
Investigative Facilities are provided only on advice of Doctor of this Hospital after registration. Routine registration for Laboratory and X-Ray Services is done from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. (Report usually on next working Day), whereas urgent investigations are done round the clock only for Admitted and Casualty patients. Ultrasound study is done with prior appointment on advise of treating doctor.
 
How can a patient get operated?
 

If a patient comes in casualty and attending doctor feels that immediate operation is essential for cure and recovery of patient then doctor operates him in emergency operation theatre, which is open 24 hours. If patient comes in OPD for some disease requiring operation he is checked for fitness for surgery and given appointment for operation depending on availability of operation theatre, which usually takes 1 to 3 months.

 
What are Blood Bank facilities?
 
Blood bank can give blood only to those needy patients who are admitted and treated in this hospital only. Blood bank is open for Voluntary donation from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. and a Donor card is issued by Blood Bank against which donor can get blood for him/her or close relative for one year. He/she can also get results of HIV, HBSAg, HCV, VDRL or Malarial infection of his blood if he wants
 
Following facilities are not available:
 
Nursing Home, Burns ward, C.T. Scan, Doppler, Echocardiography, T.M.T., Holter, Dialysis, Superspeciality consultation

a All facilities in this hospital are free of Cost except Ultrasound which is charged at Rs.50/= per case.
a O.P.D. registration has separate ques for male, female, senior citizen, Freedom fighter, Handicapped patient and Delhi govt. employee.
a O.P.D. Registration Timings:  Weekdays 9 A.M to 1 P.M.,
Saturday 9 A.M. to 12 Noon
a Investigation Registration Timing:  Weekdays 9 A.M. to 11 A.M.
Saturdays 9 A.M. to 10.30 A.M.
a Most of the medicines are given from Hospital Pharmacy free of cost and are usually given for three days but for illness requiring prolonged treatment drugs are given for 15 or 30 days.
a Indoor patient is provided all facilities free of cost with free food
a Free Ambulance is available for referring needy patients to bigger specialized hospitals

Future Plan

  1. 150 Bedded Maternity & Child Block is under construction & likely to be handed over by August, 2005.
  2. This will accommodate Gynae & Obstetrics, Paediatrics, and Family welfare OPD and Immunization services. A new block is also under construction , which will accommodate Casualty, Emergency ward of 26 beds, Doctor Hostel with 51 rooms for Doctors and Nursing Hostel with 29 rooms to accommodates Staff nurses. Other ancillary facilities like Laboratory services and Administration block a new MRD and Library with Conference room will also be accommodated in the same building.
  3. Computerization of OPD Registration, Stores, MRD, Establishment, Accounts is under way.
  4. Strengthening of services by way of decongestion and creation of additional posts.
  5. Blood bank is also to be shifted to the present Doctor’s hostel.
 
Project is also under way for complete computerization of hospital functioning and this project will make available relevant medical data of patient to him through security password through world wide web internet at any place and time. This will also help in better management of available resources in hospital.
