Construction of barrier free Bus Queue Shelters for handicapped Persons
Delhi Transport Corporation has taken a lead in the field of Construction of Bus Queue Shelter friendly in use for all including physically challenged commuters. The Bus Queue Shelter has been designed in association with “SAMARTHYA” an organization working for the disabled persons. The sample Bus Queue Shelter constructed by Delhi Transport Corporation at its Hauz Khas Terminal required for physically challenged commuters with the following features:-
The level of the Bus Queue Shelter has been so designed that in a low floor bus the wheel chair user can enter without any outside association.
A portion of the area of the Bus Queue Shelter has been reserved for two wheel chairs to provide a preferential seating chair for handicapped persons.
For visually handicapped persons the route plates have been provided in Braille.
Ramps on both sides of the Bus Queue Shelters are quite negotiable by the wheel chair user and other handicapped persons have been provided for easy access to the Bus Queue Shelter.
Signages as per international convention have been displayed on the Bus Queue Shelters and also on appropriate location in the nearby vicinity of the Bus Queue Shelter.
The floor of the Bus Queue Shelter has been designed by providing tactiles so that a visually impaired person can easily understand his position with regard to bus and Bus Queue Shelter.
The Bus Queue Shelter has been provided with illumination.
Delhi Transport Corporation does not feel presume to have done it duly rather intends to take its mission ahead. Bus route No. 620 has been identified where all the Bus Queue Shelters shall be provided with facilities for physically challenged persons.
As in this world nobody is perfect, DTC will feel obliged if any valuable suggestion comes from anywhere for further improvement in the design of the Bus Queue Shelter.
