Untitled DocumentSouth Delhi district is one of the nine districts of NCT of Delhi which came into existence from January 1997 when Delhi was divided into Nine revenue Districts. Prior to that, there used to be only one district for whole of Delhi with district head quarter at Tis-Hazari. South District having its district head quarter at M.B. Road, Saket, has great historical, social, economical & cultural importance. It is surrounded by the states of UP and Haryana. On its southern side lie the Gurgaon & Faridabad districts of Haryana and on south eastern side is located the Gautam Budh Nagar district of UP. South district on its eastern side is flanked by East District of Delhi while on northern & western side lies New Delhi & South West districts respectively.

South district is predominantly urban but also has a sizeable rural area. There are 25 villages in the district with all characteristics of rural India. Area wise, South District is the third largest District of Delhi spread over 249 Sq. Km & covering 16.7% of the total area of NCT of Delhi. Total population of the district is 22,62,375 out of which 12,57,180 are male & 10,05,185 females 8.11% of the total population lives in rural areas.The general topography of the district is plain. However some part of the District represents the ridge characteristics of the old Arawali hills. Large part of vacant gaon sabha land of district South has been declared as Southern ridge area to be devolped as reserve forest which will slowly become one of the crucial factors influencing the local environment and improving quality of life all over NCR.

Historically, South Delhi was seat of Power from the very beginning as evident by the Tugalkabad fort made by the Tuglaks till the time old fort was constructed by Mughals. The world famous Qutub Minar and the iron pillar, Balban's tomb, Humayun's tomb, Khilji tomb are in this district. Places of religious impotance are Dargah Hazrat Nizamuddin, Kalkaji temple, Dadabadi Jain temple, Lotus temple of Bahai seat, Chattarpur temple, Hare Rama Hare Krishna temple better known as Iskun temple, Sai Baba temple etc.

An annual Cultural Social event "Phool Walon Ki Sair" is organized in the month of October in Mehrauli which is of great significance as it's a symbol of communal harmony. For social events, famous Siri Fort Auditorium, India habitat center and India International center are also part of the district. Apart from the colleges of Delhi University, South Delhi also is the Head Quarter of Indira Gandhi Open University, Jamia Milia Islamia, Jamia Humdard universities and Indian Institiute of Technology, Delhi.
