Chief Secretary

Shri Rakesh Mehta, an IAS officer (AGMU, 1975 batch), had been a Masters student from the London School of Economics & Political Science, London University. He had been a Masters from the Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University. He had also been a student of Bachelor of Arts from the St.Stephen's College in Delhi

As IAS officer he devoted his energies to public administration. Latest of his postings has been Principal Secretary (Power); Chairman & Managing Director, Transco and Chairman, Genco, NCT of Delhi. In addition to these, he is also holding the charges of Principal Secretary (Urban Development), Principal Secretary (CWG), Principal Secretary (Tourism) and Principal Secretary (Public Relations) of Govt. of NCT of Delhi.

Earlier to that Shri Mehta was the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

As Principal Secretary (Power), Shri Mehta started Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Management Centre in Delhi Transco Ltd. and as Commissioner of MCD he initiated major reforms in municipal governance which includes starting of Public­Private Partnerships in garbage management, sanitary land fills, developing parking infrastructure. Currently he is Chief Secretary, Delhi.

Among the publications, Shri Mehta wrote a book on "Industrial Growth in Goa since Liberation" published by Goa Chamber of Commerce. He also wrote "Innovations in Urban Management", an Article written for Urban Age Washington. He wrote an article on "Mediation and Participation in a Delhi Slum" for a London-based book in 1997.

Among his recent important contributions, Shri Mehta, as CMD of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) introduced 2000 CNG buses in 14 months with new technology that helped the Capital improve the air quality substantially. He was also responsible for bringing out an Action Plan for Energy Efficiency in collaboration with TERI.
